A Certified Pet Nutritionist Explains
Bully sticks are one of the most popular natural dog chews — but what exactly are they made of? CPCN-certified pet nutritionist Halle Stene gives you the honest, straight answer plus what to look for when buying.
If you've ever handed your dog a bully stick and wondered what you're actually giving them — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get at Lonestar Pet Treats, and it deserves a straight answer.
I'm Halle, owner of Lonestar Pet Treats in Cave Creek, AZ, and a Certified Professional Canine Nutritionist (CPCN). Here's the honest breakdown.
So, What Exactly Is a Bully Stick?
A bully stick — also called beef pizzle — is made from the dried or smoked penis of a bull. There it is.
Before you close the tab: this is a completely natural, single-ingredient dog chew that's been used for centuries. It's 100% beef muscle tissue — high in protein, low in fat, and free of anything synthetic.
The term "beef pizzle" is the anatomically correct name you'll see on quality products. If a chew doesn't list "beef pizzle" or "bull pizzle" as the ingredient, that's worth paying attention to.
What's In a Bully Stick Nutritionally?
Because bully sticks are single-ingredient, what you see is what you get:
- High protein — Beef pizzle is dense muscle tissue, making it an excellent protein source for dogs
- Low fat — Much lower in fat than rawhide or many processed chews
- No carbohydrates — Appropriate for dogs on raw, ketogenic, or grain-free diets
- Natural amino acids — Supports muscle maintenance and overall health
- Zero additives — No preservatives, no artificial flavors, no fillers
As a Certified Professional Canine Nutritionist, I look for single-ingredient chews because the fewer the ingredients, the less room there is for something problematic to sneak in. Bully sticks, when sourced properly, are exactly that — just one ingredient, dried.
Are Bully Sticks Safe for Dogs?
Yes — with a few things to keep in mind.
Always supervise your dog, especially with aggressive chewers. When a bully stick gets chewed down to a small nub (roughly an inch), take it away to prevent a choking hazard. A bully stick holder can keep the stick secure and make it easier to remove safely when it's time.
Watch the calorie count. Bully sticks are calorie-dense. A standard 6-inch stick can contain anywhere from 70–130 calories depending on thickness. For smaller dogs or dogs on a weight management plan, factor this into their daily intake.
Source matters. Not all bully sticks are created equal. Look for:
- Single ingredient (beef pizzle only)
- No added chemicals or preservatives
- Grass-fed or pasture-raised sourcing when possible
- Clearly listed country of origin
Can Puppies Have Bully Sticks?
Yes — bully sticks are one of the safest chews for puppies. They're softer than antlers or bones, fully digestible, and help relieve teething discomfort. Choose an appropriately sized stick for your puppy's breed and always supervise the session.
How Do Bully Sticks Compare to Rawhide?
This is a big one. Rawhide is chemically processed hide — often bleached, treated with preservatives, and nearly indigestible. When dogs swallow large chunks, it can cause dangerous intestinal blockages.
Bully sticks are the opposite: fully digestible, single ingredient, and processed without harsh chemicals. As someone who works with raw-fed dogs every day, I never recommend rawhide. Bully sticks are what I keep on the shelf at our Cave Creek store — and what I give my own dogs.
What to Look for When Buying Bully Sticks
Here's my CPCN-certified checklist:
- ✅ Single ingredient listed — "beef pizzle" or "bull pizzle"
- ✅ No artificial preservatives — no sodium metabisulfite or BHA/BHT
- ✅ Country of origin clearly listed
- ✅ Appropriate size for your dog — 6-inch for medium dogs, 12-inch for large breeds
- ✅ Braided options for heavy chewers who power through standard sticks quickly
At Lonestar Pet Treats, every bully stick we carry meets these standards. We stock standard 6-inch and 12-inch sticks, braided options for tough chewers, and water buffalo bully sticks for dogs who want something a little different.
The Bottom Line
Bully sticks are made from one thing: dried beef pizzle. They're natural, digestible, protein-rich, and one of the safest chews you can give your dog — as long as you're buying from a source you trust and supervising the chew session.
If you have questions about which chew is right for your dog's size, age, or dietary needs, we're always happy to help. Stop by our Cave Creek store or reach out directly — that's what we're here for.
